Kinniska
Some 3,000 years ago, Kinniska was a Spartan princess who, among her other accomplishments , and in spite of the Athenians' antipathy for women in general, and their ban on women from competing in the Olympics in specific, still managed to train not one but two successive champion teams of charioteers. So that the Athenians wouldn't forget it, she put up a stone monument that said I, Kinniska, have done this.
I find her determination and her attitude to be refreshing and inspiring.
More about Sparta and Kinniska can be read thanks to the scholarship of, among others, Sarah Pomeroy, and viewed in the PBS documentary The Greeks.
As for myself, well; I
work. I write. I eat. I garden. I travel. I hike, camp and take photos. I watch
a few movies and read far more
books, and try to keep up
on my email correspondence. When I’m home I try to catch up on projects (like
knitting one of two large sweaters…and a baby sweater…and…)
I need a 36-hour day.
Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to
remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.
